Competition Rules
· Art. 1
The competition is
open to musicians of all nationalities.
· Art. 2
The competition is
divided into three categories;
Category A:
compositions based upon or inspired by ethnic music from Sardinia:
Duru duru
Category B: original free compositions
Category C: performance: Singing
Music compositions in
category A must be based on the traditional Sardinian song Duru
duru. An example of this song can be downloaded clicking

· Art. 3
All the compositions of the A and B categories must have one or more
improvised soloist parts, by any instruments within the orchestra.

Art. 4 The
pieces of the A and B categories must be written for the following
ensemble
1st Alto
Sax (optional Soprano sax)
2nd Alto Sax (optional Clarinet)
1st Tenor Sax
2nd Tenor Sax (optional Clarinet)
Baritone Sax
1st Trumpet (optional Flugelhorn)
2nd Trumpet (optional Flugelhorn)
3rd Trumpet (optional Flugelhorn)
4th Trumpet (optional Flugelhorn)
1st French Horn
2nd French Horn
1st Trombone
2nd Trombone
Bass Trombone
Piano
Guitar
Double Bass (optional Electric 6 strings Bass)
Drums
All
the above instruments must be included.
Pieces written for a different set of instruments will not be
considered.

Art. 5.
Composers can participate in both categories A and B. Only one piece
of music per category can be submitted. The compositions should not
be longer than ten minutes. Compositions submitted in past editions
of “Scrivere in Jazz” will not be considered.

Art. 6 (Category C)
The performers can take part in the eliminatory stages by sending a
CDr - demo (which should be not longer than ten minutes) consisting
of a ballad and a medium-fast piece of their choice.

Art. 7 The
scores should include all the single parts of each single
instrument, written clearly and in accordance with the score as far
as the dynamic signs and the tempo markings, which if not respected
can lead to the exclusion from the competition. The scores should
indicate the category in which one intends to take part, and should
be signed by the candidate. Categories A and B: an audio or midi
file of the submitted score is required
The scores for categories A and B (both score and single parts) and
the demo CDs for category C must be sent in triple copy by
registered return post to:

Along with the application for participation, the following personal
data must be included: name, date and place of birth, residence,
address, telephone number and a declaration of acceptance of
competition rules, together with the receipt of payment of the entry
fee. The scores and the single parts will not be returned.
The entry amount is € 20 (Euro) for every category of the
competition.

Art. 8
(categories A and B) The selecting committee, formed by some of
the most authoritative Italian and foreign jazz-musicians, will
select four to six pieces for the final phase of the competition.
These will be played by the Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna during the
closing nights of the competition.

Art. 9 (category C)
The selecting committee will admit up to 8 performers to the closing
nights of the competition. The vocal performances will be selected
no later than 31st July 2008, and the selecting committee
will assign to each performer two standard pieces (a ballad
and a medium-fast drawn from a group of 8) both
arranged for voice and orchestra. The scores will be sent to the
performers soon after the selection has been made.
Semifinal
The selected
performers will play live the night before the final evening
performance.
Final
The 3
performers who scored maximum points during the semifinal will be
admitted to the final evening performance.
The Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna will play with the
performers during the closing nights (semifinal and final).

Art. 10 During
the closing nights of the competition (to be held in Sassari during
September 2008) a jury, composed by the selecting committee and by
other renowned representatives of the European music scene, will
announce the winning music piece of each section; the winning prizes
in money are:
category
A: € 2000 (Euro) gross
category B: € 1500 (Euro) gross
category C: € 1500 (Euro) gross
Each of
the finalists present at the closing nights of the competition will
receive a reimbursement of their travel expenses up to a maximum of
€ 500 (Euro) (according to the place they have come from). The
finalists should contact the organisation to agree upon the means of
travelling. The jury, whose judgement is final, reserves the right
to jointly award the winning prizes if there are other deserving
music pieces, or not to hand out one or more of the money prizes.

Art. 11 The
winning compositions in Categories A and B could be included in the
musical programmes or compact discs produced by the Orchestra Jazz
della Sardegna. The performers in category C could be invited to
take part to the Associazione Blue Note Orchestra’s concerts. The
event may also be filmed either in part or entirely for radio or
television recordings with promotional intentions; the candidates,
however, cannot claim any rights apart for those provided by the law
on author’s rights.
